Dehradun, the
capital city of Uttarakhand will get the first tiger cell of the country as the
Wildlife Institute of India (WII) campus, Dehradun and National Tiger
Conservation Authority (NTCA) will be signing a Memorandum of understanding on
Saturday in this regard.
The tiger cell
will manage the database of tigers from around 50 tiger reserves and it is
being set up in order to boost the conservation of tigers by regularly keeping a
track of their population and incidents of poaching taking place in the
country.
The senior
scientist, YV Jhala at Wildlife Institute of India will be the head of this
program.
YV Jhala told
TOI that this tiger cell will have all the data from all over the country for
over more than last 10 years and the cell will also have the authority to give
permission for development projects in locations which are tiger habitats.
A database of
DNA samples of tigers has also been created by WII which will help them in
identifying the location and original home places of tigers. \
